| Our shipyards
on the Gulf Coast: |
Pascagoula, Mississippi
Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding–Gulf Coast is Mississippi’s largest private employer. We are a main provider of major surface warships to the U.S. Navy, and have modernized dozens of other naval ships. We are the only U.S. shipyard in recent years to be developing and building six different classes of ships for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.

Gulfport, Mississippi
The Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Composites Center of Excellence is expanding to support the state-of-the-art DDG 1000 carbon-fiber deckhouses. The facility’s transformation coincides with a recent shift toward composite structures in naval applications. Today, the benefits of greater stealth and reduced weight—especially above the water line where reductions enhance stability—have prompted more composite applications. Equally important is the inherent corrosion resistance of these materials, which significantly lowers a ship’s lifecycle costs.
The Composite Center Of Excellence is positioned well to lead in the expansion of composite applications for our Navy and Coast Guard customers. New composite technology development and process improvements are continual, and ensured through our relationships with other sectors within Northrop Grumman and the teaming relationships that we have with many premier universities and suppliers.

New Orleans, Louisiana
Located on the banks of the Mississippi River approximately 12 miles upriver from downtown New Orleans, the shipyard is Louisiana’s largest manufacturing employer. Among the most versatile shipbuilders in the United States, our site includes three outfitting docks totaling more than 6,000 linear feet. In addition to the shipyard, operations include the Maritime Technology Center of Excellence and the Composites Center of Excellence.
Since the mid-1970s, we have delivered more than 40 new, major surface noncombatant ships into the Navy’s fleet, along with several other commercial vessels. In addition, numerous naval and commercial ships have returned to our shipyard over the years for conversion or modernization.
